Haaland keeps scoring, Carrick keeps drawing, and a Bosnian set up the goal that hurt me most
Before we get to Leeds vs Man United, the headline: Manchester City are perfect. Their 3-2 Premier League win over Ipswich Town on Saturday made it seven from seven, a first in club history, according to The National, and only the third such start in Premier League history. Enzo Maresca also became the first manager to win his first seven Premier League games at a new club. Phil Foden opened the scoring, Daizen Maeda equalised within three minutes, then Erling Haaland headed in on 34 and finished low midway through the second half to reach 12 goals this season. VAR denied him a hat-trick for offside, Zian Flemming's late penalty made it nervy, and Haaland limped off at full time, though Maresca played it down.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin scores Leeds United's equalizer against Manchester United at Elland Road.
All this while City appeal the verdict, announced during the international break, finding them guilty of 114 Premier League financial charges. The club denies wrongdoing. On the pitch, they're three points clear.
Arsenal keep winning ugly: 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on Sunday, now 18 points. Brighton thrashed Crystal Palace 5-0 and sit third with a goal difference of +18 that looks like a typo. Liverpool came from behind to win 2-1 at nine-man Brentford but lost two more players to injury.
My week as a United fan: Champions League Tuesday at Atletico Madrid, Pablo Barrios scored inside a minute, Leny Yoro was sent off and Ademola Lookman made it 2-0. Then Lisandro Martínez publicly called out director of football Jason Wilcox over the summer signings, before apologizing Thursday after talks with Michael Carrick and club leadership. Some clubs have a press office. We have a soap opera.
By Friday, Carrick was telling reporters questions about his future were "not important." On Sunday he started Martínez anyway. Peace treaty signed.
At Elland Road, Senne Lammens kept out Nico Elvedi's downward header early, then Bryan Mbeumo finished Youri Tielemans' low cross on 35 minutes. I was a happy man in Utah at 7 a.m. Then Dominic Calvert-Lewin thumped in the equaliser on 51, and the rest was a scrappy, angry derby that ended with Ethan Ampadu and Andrey Santos booked in stoppage time. Fair result. Painful result.
That's three straight 1-1 league draws, five league games without a win, and 13th place on 7 points, United's fewest league wins after seven games since 1986-87. Carrick admitted the situation "doesn't look great" and has opened the door to January signings. Michael, I've seen the table. Bring a defender. Bring two.
Leeds United matched Manchester United's fight, stayed unbeaten at Elland Road and sit 7th on 10 points. Their fans were dreaming of a first home win over United in 24 years. They didn't get it, but they didn't lose either.
That equalizer came from a Tarik Muharemović header. A Bosnian assist against my own club. I cheered and cried at the same time.
Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur finally won, 3-1 over Coventry City on Monday, with Dejan Kulusevski back after 526 days out, according to Sky Sports. Chelsea won 2-0 at Everton, and Aston Villa won 1-0 at Newcastle.
Up next: Man United at Como (Champions League), then Bournemouth at home; Leeds at Sunderland. Big one: Aston Villa v Man City.
