Picking the ball up with his/her hands will lead to rules of goalie infraction and an indirect free kick will be called against the goalie by the referee.
Goalkeeper is ALLOWED to pick the ball up with his/her hands after it is headed or chested back to him/her by a teammate according to rules of soccer goalkeeper written in the "Laws of the Game".
Soccer goalie rules protect the goalkeeper rather well inside their penalty box by the referee, however being too rough on his/her opponent will cause a penalty kick to be called against them.
One foul by the goalie leads to a penalty kick with a possible yellow or red card being given to the goalkeeper depending on the situation.
Goalkeepers are known to be fearless, great athletes and not afraid of few knocks here and there. They will make some incredible saves by just not giving up and diving for every ball inside their area.
First rule of any soccer goalkeeper is that you cannot be afraid of the ball.
That is pretty much the only rule as everything else comes with training and years of consistent practice.
